Before Printing: Supplement Label Artwork Version Checks

A practical proofing sequence connects the label file to its formula, SKU, serving details, language versions and print approval.

1. Establish the version being reviewed

Create a label data sheet with the SKU, formula revision, pack dimensions, unit count and artwork revision. A date in the filename is insufficient unless the file is linked to the confirmed product specification.

Mark superseded files accordingly and nominate one proof and one owner for this review. Consolidating comments prevents conflicting instructions reaching the designer.

2. Check numbers alongside the source data

Compare the ingredient list, serving configuration, servings per pack, net contents and directions. Pay particular attention to per-capsule versus per-serving figures and milligrams versus micrograms. Every number should be traceable.

This is an operational proofing sequence, not a complete legal label checklist. Appropriate reviewers must assess language, warnings, claims and other requirements for the intended market.

3. Review the physical printing conditions

Check legibility, trimming and clear space at actual size, including barcode, batch and date positions. Something readable on screen may be difficult to read on a curved bottle or beside a seal.

Confirm bleed, material, colour and file requirements with the packaging or printing partner. Record proof-sample revisions and distinguish a visual mock-up from a file released for printing.

4. Close the review in writing

Record the file revision, reviewers, date, decision and open issues. Separate technical-data confirmation, copy review and print release so a vague approval does not stand for every step.

The FDA GMP guide is a US packaging and labelling-control reference, not a substitute for market-specific review elsewhere. Reopen affected checks after a formula or packaging change.
