Why does UC-II® keep coming up in joint-health product planning? Brands considering an OEM launch should understand the ingredient, the limits of its published research, and the practical steps between a confirmed formula and delivery. ACC Biotech regards UC-II® as a flagship ingredient option for a joint-health range and can help brands assess the raw material, formulation and manufacturing route.
UC-II® is a patented branded ingredient supplied by Lonza. It is undenatured type II collagen sourced from chicken sternum cartilage. The ACC Biotech UC-II® ingredient profile identifies the developer, origin and supporting information. A specification saying only “type II collagen” does not establish that the material is the branded UC-II® ingredient; buyers should verify supplier documentation and identity.
A brand planning to use the UC-II® name or logo should also check supply terms, trademark permissions, labelling and requirements in its target market. These details belong in the product brief before quotation.
“Undenatured” describes collagen whose native structure is retained through processing. Hydrolysed collagen is broken down into shorter peptide fragments. The two forms have different specifications, study conditions and formulation uses; they should not be treated as interchangeable simply because both are called collagen. Lonza describes its UC-II® process as preserving the triple-helical structure of type II collagen and associated epitopes.
Product development starts by checking material identity, source, specification and batch records, then reviewing the intended format and label. Because UC-II® comes from chicken cartilage, source and allergen information should also be reviewed for the destination market and final formula.
A 2022 randomised controlled study enrolled 96 healthy adults with activity-related knee discomfort and no history of joint disease. It compared 40 mg of UC-II® daily with placebo over 24 weeks and reported a between-group difference in knee flexion range of motion. The 40 mg amount is the material dose studied; it does not establish that every finished OEM formula will produce the same outcome.
Evidence depends on the population and endpoint. A separate 2026 randomised controlled trial in 216 adults with knee osteoarthritis did not demonstrate superiority over placebo on its primary measure at 24 weeks. The populations differ. For any brand, the sound approach is to compare the studies with its target consumers, actual formula, dose and local rules before writing product claims. Ingredient research is not a treatment promise.

Its branded identity, traceable specifications and published human research on joint movement and comfort give product teams a concrete basis for positioning, sourcing and quality discussions. “Flagship” describes how ACC Biotech positions the ingredient within a range; it does not mean every consumer will experience the same result, and it does not replace finished-product testing or regulatory review.
Start with the destination market, intended audience, format, serving information and packaging. If other ingredients will be included, assess the full formula rather than adding together results from studies of separate materials.
ACC Biotech can assess delivery in approximately 30 days at the earliest for a qualifying UC-II® OEM project. The start point and actual date are confirmed in writing after ingredient availability, formulation, packaging and label content have been agreed. New formulation testing, special packaging, further documentation or additional market review can change the timeline.
To start promptly, share the intended sales market, format, units per pack, initial quantity, packaging design status and delivery destination. With a clear brief, the team can assess material supply, quotation, quality documents, a production slot and the delivery plan.
