Supplement Packaging: Separating Seal Checks from Tamper Evidence

Closure fit, seal integrity and visible opening evidence answer different questions. Define each check when reviewing an OEM packaging sample.

Map the actual packaging assembly

List the bottle, closure, liner, seal, carton and any tamper-evident components, with material codes and supplier versions. Similar-looking bottles still require a check of the components actually proposed together.

This is an editorial project checklist. FDA’s dietary supplement CGMP guide provides US manufacturing and packaging context. Teams should separately establish the applicable market requirements and acceptance criteria.

Assess seal performance and opening evidence separately

An intact seal and a consumer-visible indication of prior opening address different questions. Plan and record them separately. A tidy appearance alone does not substantiate moisture protection, leak resistance or tamper evidence.

Where a project needs a particular barrier or sealing performance, document the conditions, samples, acceptance method and responsible reviewer. Evidence should cover the actual assembly rather than a description of one component.

Keep more than the best-looking sample

Sampling records can capture seal edges, closure fit, appearance after opening and observed line issues. Link photographs to sample identifiers, dates and material versions so that another reviewer can follow the evidence.

Record tilted caps, wrinkles or incomplete sealing with their observed conditions and send them for assessment. Replacing an unattractive sample with a good photograph does not demonstrate that the underlying issue has been resolved.

Revisit affected checks after a change

When changing a closure, sealing material or supplier, identify which previous conclusions need reassessment. Appearance, line compatibility and transport evidence have their own scopes; do not extend a result beyond what was assessed.

Retain the approved version, inspection results, exception handling and release responsibility. Packaging design supports quality management, alongside assessment of the finished product and its storage and use conditions.
