2026 Supplement Trends: Popularity Surveys Are Not Sales Rankings

Before treating a supplement popularity survey as a product opportunity, check who responded, when they responded and what was measured.

1. Start with the respondents

On 26 February 2026, ConsumerLab released survey results from more than 8,850 supplement users drawn from its newsletter readership. This was a retrospective of its year-end survey, not breaking October news or a representative measure of Hong Kong consumers.

2. Popularity and revenue answer different questions

Whether a respondent bought a category differs from bottles sold, revenue or repeat-purchase frequency. A person can use several categories, so category percentages should not be interpreted as mutually exclusive market shares.

Create three columns when reviewing a ranking: the original measure, the conclusion it supports and the information still missing. Interest can justify customer interviews without proving demand for a particular premium-priced offer.

3. Add evidence from your own market

Use the survey to generate questions, then review customer enquiries, channel feedback and available sales data. Compare consistent periods, territories and units. Keep retail units, wholesale shipments and search interest separate.

A small concept interview can explore frustrations with existing products, preferred formats, label understanding and shopping channels. Establish whether the problem exists before asking whether a proposed formula solves it. Leading questions can produce misleading agreement.

4. Separate the hypothesis from the production brief

Record the source signal, intended audience, untested assumptions and next validation step in the concept brief. Put ingredient, packaging and order conditions in the quotation brief. A consumer survey is neither a finished-product efficacy trial nor an endorsement of a brand’s quality.

This separation makes decisions easier to revise when new evidence arrives. Retaining the source and date in public copy helps readers assess a trend claim more clearly than an unsupported “best-selling” label.
