Reading the CDC 2026 Nutrition Report: Association Is Not Causation

Read population nutrition data with its time periods and design in view before turning an observed difference into a product claim.

1. The report year is not every observation year

The CDC 2026 Nutrition Report draws on multiple US NHANES cycles, with periods varying by biomarker. This is a report recap, not a newly announced October product trial.

Read the dates, population and units in each figure. A 2026 cover date does not describe the nutritional status of Hong Kong residents in 2026.

2. Separate observed differences from causal effects

CDC explicitly describes supplement-user versus non-user comparisons as descriptive, not causal effects of taking supplements. They are not a randomised trial of a particular branded product.

The groups may differ in diet, lifestyle and other characteristics. Retain the study’s limitations rather than converting a population difference into a promise that taking a product will produce improvement.

3. Write down the question a chart answers

Note who was studied, what was measured, when data were collected and which conclusion the comparison supports. A blood biomarker is not a measure of product sales or how a customer feels.

Keep the original source and definitions with any chart reference. Check denominators and units. If the groups being compared cannot be explained clearly, do not lead with a percentage in the headline.

4. Review product evidence separately

A population report can prompt useful research questions. Evidence for the proposed ingredient, amount, audience and finished formula still needs its own review. Population data and product-efficacy evidence serve different purposes.

Keep reported facts, editorial interpretation and untested product hypotheses in separate columns. Public wording should retain the source year and scope rather than exceed what the report supports.
